Located on the banks of the Tisza, Szeged's most determining event in it's history, and in the development of it's town scape of today is, the flood of 1879. Large numbers of the buildings were destroyed, and the majority of nowadays Szeged, was built after the flood: more beautiful, and more modern buildings were built instead of the old ones. After the Trianon Peace Treaty, Szeged took over the role of many disengaged Southern Hungarian city, and it's significance just increased. It became the county seat of Csongrad in 1962. Before the regime change, Szeged's role as the light- and food industry center was advanced, and even today, it is one of the country's food industry leader. Szeged and surroundings, grow and process the world famous paprika. The salami manufacturing here is world renowned, thanks to Pick Salami Factory. Besides this, Szeged is a University town, and a cultural center. University of Szeged is Hungary's top rated learning for higher advancement institution. Szeged's events, for example the Szeged Open Air Plays, draw many international visitors year after year. The local food specialty, made from local fish from the Tisza, is the world famous Fish soup of Szeged, the Halászlé.
